The Avon Descent is tough, it tests everyone and it’s WA’s second longest running event. It is part of the very fabric of WA culture. The 43rd Avon Descent takes paddlers and power craft on a 124 km journey over two days from Northam to Bayswater. Avon Descenters are some of the most passionate people you will meet and train year-round to take part in this great event!
The Event Managers are looking for four enthusiastic, intuitive and reliable third year students to be Avon Descenters. Each student will have the amazing opportunity to gain hands on industry experience, boost their resume and portfolio, be exposed to networking opportunities and have key roles on event days.
As an intern, you will be assisting and reporting to the Event Manager and Sponsorship and Marketing Manager. It is expected that you will be available a minimum of one day per week from January 2016 through to the end of August 2016. This will include being available over the 2016 Avon Descent weekend.
POSITION DESCRIPTIONS
Position One – Event Management Intern
As Event Management Intern, you will work closely with the Event Manager to design, manage and execute the 2016 Avon Descent. The race spans 124 km, so there are is an exceptional amount of planning that must occur to ensure everything runs smoothly! Key aspects of this position are:
- Liaising with key stakeholders, including sponsors and local governments
- Managing multiple secondary events, such as sponsor functions and race pack collection
- Ensuring all event logistics are in place ready for the Avon Descent to go off without a hitch!
Positions Two and Three – Marketing and Communications Interns
The Marketing and Communications Interns will be working on the implementation of the marketing plan. Key responsibilities will be:
- Social media account management
- Stakeholder engagement
- Website management
- E-Newsletter creation and distribution
- Photographer coordination
- Sponsor liaison
- Monthly marketing reports
- Media guide content
- Occasional media liaison duties
- Post-event reports
Position Four – Graphic Design Intern
As Graphic Design Intern, you will be responsible for liaising with major news organisations to promote this great event. This opportunity also includes the following key responsibilities:
- Creation of event posters
- Bumper sticker design
- Event guide
- Compilation of media guide
- Print advertisements
- Online banners
